The names have been revealed of the four service members who were killed by a fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta over the weekend.

Maj.-Gen Wade Rutland, commander of the first division of the Canadian Armed Forces said the fallen officers are Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pvt. Shaun Farrell, Pvt. Aidan Goulding and Pvt. Hayden Lykkemark.

Military officials say a grass fire was burning in a training area on Saturday, but it was not initially considered a threat until strong and sudden winds sent flames barrelling toward them.

Officials say the blaze was about a kilometre away, was under control and posed no immediate danger. But flames quickly approached the troops during a training exercise, killing four and injuring 39, including 19 in critical condition.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is calling this one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil.

“The nation is in mourning for those brave members of our armed forces we have lost. And I have asked the flags on all federal buildings to be flown at half-mast to honour them,” Carney says.

“Our hearts go with them and we are praying for the wounded. And we stand in solidarity and compassion for the families, the friends and the colleagues of those affected by this tragedy.”

An investigation will take place to examine wind, vegetation and terrain to determine how the fire spread so rapidly.

Premier Doug Ford says flags will be flown at half-mast at all Ontario government buildings.
