Fire officials say careless smoking led to a multiple alarm fire at a west Hamilton apartment building.
Firefighters were called to 1884 Main St. W around 6 a.m. That building and neighbouring buildings were evacuated.
It appears the fire started in a unit on the sixth floor but was quickly put out.

Fire officials say the tenant was able to get to the balcony where he was rescued.
The 61-year-old man was taken to hospital to be assessed.
The unit is badly damaged.
