Motorcyclist killed after crash with taxi
A young man is dead after his motorcycle crashed into a cab in Hamilton. It happened on Bay Street South and Robinson Street.
The area is still blocked off with police tape. You can see what’s left of the man’s motorcycle on the road. Police say he was in his 20’s and was speeding.
And you can see from the blood on the road just how violent this crash was. He was driving on Bay Street South when his bike slammed into the side of a cab that had just gone through the intersection at Robinson Street. It happened just after six this evening.
We spoke to the passenger in that cab shortly after the accident. He was visibly shaken and didn’t want to appear on camera. But he told me the cab stopped at the stop sign then continued on Robinson and that’s when he heard the bike’s engine. He said the motorcyclist was going fast and he heard the bike skid then it crashed into the side of the cab.
A nurse was one of the first people on the scene and performed CPR on the man before an ambulance arrived. The man was taken to the hospital where he died. The cab driver and the passenger weren’t hurt.
We spoke to a woman who was going for a walk when he saw the bike speed by her just before it crashed: “I was going out for a walk with my mom and he zoomed by us and all we saw was he slipped and I called 911 right away and then everybody started crowding around him. Was he going fast when he went by you? Yeah he was going really fast he zoomed he was flying by us.”
Hamilton Police Staff Sgt. Gary Thompson: “It appears that speed is a factor and undetermined at this point in time if alcohol was a factor as well.”
Police have shut down Bay Street South between Duke and Charlton while the accident reconstruction unit investigates. They say this area will be closed until two or three in the morning.
