The Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Montreal Victoire claim Canada’s first Walter Cup in 4-0 win over Ottawa Charge Wednesday evening.
Led by three-time Olympic gold medal winner Marie Philip-Poulin, the team had their moment of redemption after last year’s loss to the Ottawa Charge in the semi-finals.
Poulin was awarded the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP for her two goals and six assists throughout the nine playoff games.
The MVP spoke of the challenges women’s hockey has experienced prior to the launch of the PWHL.
“After the CWHL closed its doors there were two years where we didn’t really know what was going to happen,” said Poulin. “There was a group of women who came together to put this league together. Three years later it all comes together to win the Walter Cup. It feels good, it feels really good.”
Poulin also reflected on the impact a women’s hockey league has on young girls, saying that when she was a child she dreamed of playing in the NHL.
