Money the weapon in T.O. violence fight
Premier Dalton McGuinty is putting more provincial money into guns and gangs policing in Toronto.
It’s the Premier’s response to the string of shootings in Toronto last week. Four people were killed in the gunfire and the city’s mayor says they’ve got to do something.
McGuinty and some of his cabinet ministers met this afternoon with mayor Rob Ford and Toronto’s police chief.
The Premier said the province is going to keep paying five million dollars a year permanently for a Toronto police violence intervention program. Mayor Rob Ford calls that a huge victory for Toronto, in the wake of the shootings last week.
Funding for the program was supposed to run out this year. The province is also coming up with more money for community organizations working to prevent young people from turning to gangs and violence.
