Video updated Grief counselors are at a Port Credit high school today after a 17-year old girl died after being hit by a GO train in Mississauga.

We now know the name of the teen who was killed in what Peel Regional Police are calling a “tragic accident.”

17-year old Mamta Singh was walking on the tracks with a friend late yesterday afternoon when she was hit and killed by the train. She was a grade 11 student at Port Credit High School.

The school says it’s preparing a book of student and staff remembrance and condolence that will be presented to the family. Friends of the teen are also expressing their condolences online today.

Police say she was crossing the tracks just east of the Port Credit station when a westbound train hit her from behind. She apparently didn’t hear the approaching train. Her friend was able to get out of the way in time and wasn’t hurt.

Peel police are reminding people that it’s illegal to walk on the tracks, but that spot is a popular shortcut.

The school principal has prepared a letter to send home with students today, saying “this tragedy has brought great sadness to the students and staff at Port Credit. Mamta was a great friend to many and a credit to our school. She will be deeply missed.”

The letter also says the counselors who are at the school today will remain there as long as they’re needed.
