Medlock looks for perfection

At training camp, Justin Medlock said he was striving for perfection. Well, so far through 6 games, the Ticats placekicker has not been perfect — but pretty close to it.

While the Ticats’ appear to be struggling on many levels, Justin Medlock has been a bright spot — with a 92.9 percent kicking accuracy, third best in the league, and a personal best throughout his CFL career.

General Manager and Head Coach Kent Austin: “Oh yes, he’s doing a great job kicking field goals. Unfortunately, the one in Calgary, we just had a miss-hold, but he’s been what we hoped he would be in field goal kicking.”

This is the one exception to Medlock’s otherwise perfect season — a 46-yard attempt in Calgary that completely bummed-out the 30-year old California native and UCLA alum.

Justin Medlock: “I don’t know, I just try to kick the ball and go from there, move on to the next kick and try not to dwell on past kicks, so.”

Cary Koch stepped-up for an injured Luke Tasker last week, but it looks like Tasker will be back holding for Medlock on Saturday against Calgary.

Special Teams Coach Jeff Reinbold: “Anytime you have the kind of kicker with the kind of accuracy he has, it changes the dimension of how you call a game because once you get across the 47 yard line, he’s in a position to get you points.”

Justin Medlock: “I don’t really look at it like I’m having success. It’s just me doing my job. There’s a lot of good kickers in this league. We’re asked to kick and punt — do what we need to do.”
