Man dead after water rescue at Binbrook Conservation Area

A man in his 60s has been pronounced dead after being pulled from the water at Binbrook Conservation Area on Thursday morning.

Hamilton police say they were called just before 9:30 a.m. to assist with the medical emergency.

Firefighters arrived to find park staff and police performing CPR.

Paramedics rushed the man, who had no vital signs, to hospital and attempted resuscitation along with the assistance of fire crews.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death.

They say a woman in her 50s was also removed from the water and taken to hospital in stable condition. It’s unclear what her injuries are.

“I believe that the [Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority] board needs to review their policies in light of recent deaths to require life jackets for any customers using watercraft,” says Ward 9 Coun. Brad Clark.

The conservation area was closed briefly on Thursday but has since reopened.

This marks the third tragedy this summer at Binbrook Conservation Area.

On July 1, a seven-year-old boy went missing and was found dead in Lake Niapenco inside the park the following day.

In an unrelated and unsuspicious incident on Canada Day, a 61-year-old Hamilton man died after his kayak capsized at Binbrook Conservation Area.
