GO Transit is sending a message to its riders following the tragic death of 31 year old Daniel Panacci. He was killed when the backpack he was wearing got clipped by a train – pulling him under and onto the tracks. This acccident has highlighted the need for extra caution for commuters waiting on what are sometimes very busy platforms.
The accident happened around 5:30 pm on Tuesday at Union Station in Toronto. “His backpack seemed to get somehow stuck on the locomotive the very end of a 12 car train. That swept him under and he died of very serious injuries” said Anne Marie Aikins from Metrolinx. “Our business is to take care of people, and get them to where they need to go – and get there safely. And we do that for millions of people but very rarely something like this happens and it hits us very hard.”
Go transit is urging all passengers to stay behind the yellow line and be mindful of their surroundings.
Daniel Panacci was an employee of RBC. The bank says “we are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with our colleague’s family during this very difficult time.”
