A Toronto man has been arrested and charged with performing weddings without a licence. According to police, the fraudster had been officiating weddings without authority for the past 3 years across the GTA. Close to 50 couples who hired 69 year old Paul Cogan as their officiant will have to be married all over again.
Cogan, who also goes by the name Paul Martin, left a Toronto courthouse today, his bail was set at $500. Back in August of 2013 Cogan lost his licence but detectives suggest he continued officiating weddings. In order to register the marriages police allege he would forge another officiants signature. Cogan is facing five charges including fraud and forgery.
According to his website, pridefulweddings.com, Paul has performed more than two thousand ceremonies across the province. It also says Paul is trained in psychotherapy and various relaxation therapies.
