Man arrested for string of Welland mail thefts, police warn of fraud risks

Niagara police have arrested an Etobicoke, Ont. man for a series of alleged thefts from mailboxes at Welland homes.

Officers say they arrested 31-year-old Huguens Charlescat and charged him with two counts of theft from mail.

Detectives are advising residents to contact Equifax and Trans Union if they believe Charlescat may have attended their residence to see if any unauthorized credit cards have been opened in their name.

Investigators in Niagara are reminding residents to routinely check their credit reports to ensure no unauthorized credit cards or loans have been opened in their names.

If residents find evidence of theft of their mail or if they believe they have been the victim of fraud, officers are directing them to call 905-688-4111.

If a resident’s mail has been stolen and they believe it to be connected to this situation, they are asked to contact the 905-688-4111 option 3, extension 100929.
