Lessons learned from a harrowing journey

When Erik Griffioen was shot in Thailand three years ago, he had a 15% chance of surviving.

But while he was unlucky to be shot, the Dundas physicist was lucky to have a wife who’s a doctor who could help him live. Their story is a cautionary tale for anyone taking a trip to a foreign country, where police investigations and medical care can be significantly less than what we expect in Canada.

In part two of their story, Erik and his wife tell Nick Dixon about the farcical police investigation into his shooting, and why it was so important that she speak up on his behalf.

Erik and Liz learned a couple of lessons which people considering any foreign travel should keep in mind.
First, buy travel insurance. His flight back from Thailand would have cost them $250,000 without insurance.
Secondly — and perhaps more importantly — make sure you have someone who is an advocate for you, like Liz was for Erik.
While you may not have medical training like Liz — you can always ask doctors for more help or treatment if you think it’s neccessary.
