A refugee from Kenya says he has been working and living in Hamilton for the past eight years, and is expecting an extension to remain in Canada.

John Mulwa works two jobs as a chef and farmer in the city, but he was facing a deportation back to Kenya scheduled for Saturday.

However, 39-year-old Mulwa informed CHCH News that he is no longer boarding his flight to Kenya tomorrow.

Mulwa came to Canada as a refugee in 2014, leaving behind his family and a three-month-old daughter.

“I came as a refugee, seeking protection from the government,” he said.

Mulwa would not provide specific details but said it isn’t safe for him to go back to Kenya and he fears for his life.

A couple months ago, Mulwa received a letter from the Canadian government, saying his refugee claim has been denied and that he will be deported.

On Dec. 12, Mulwa was surrounded by supporters and community members as he met with Canada Border Services about the details of his deportation.

During that time, he was told to come back with a plane ticket to Kenya before the end of January.

Mulwa’s lawyers have been working on his residency status for the past few years, but they say the immigration process can be very challenging for someone who is new to the country.
