Keeping the homeless warm
Hamilton’s homeless shelters were filled beyond capacity during the cold snap this weekend.
Once the 92 beds were filled at the biggest shelter in town – the Salvation Army – ten more guests were given mats to put down in the TV room. The Salvation Army speaks hourly with the other two shelters in town (the Good Shepherd and Mission Services) to make sure everyone has a bed, access to a shower, toiletries, and a hot meal or two.
There is even less free space at the only homeless shelter for women in the city. Mary’s Place has 20 beds, and will let women sleep on the couch if they’ve nowhere else to go.
All shelters are looking for extra warm clothing, hats, mitts and boots, which will be given to anyone in need.
