The Saudi Arabian government is reporting Thursday morning that one of its refineries on the Red Sea was hit by an Iranian drone strike.
It comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of Israel over the war with Iran.
In a post on Truth Social Wednesday night, Trump said Israel lashed out in anger, and the U.S. “knew nothing” about the attack on the South Pars gas field.
The Wall Street Journal, however, cited unnamed U.S. officials, saying that Trump approved of the strike to pressure Iran into unblocking the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran wasted no time in firing back at oil facilities around the Persian Gulf with Qatar reporting extensive damage at its main energy hub.
Trump warns that if Iran continues to attack Qatar, the U.S. will “massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars gas field.”
Early Thursday morning, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said in an interview that tolerance of Iranian attacks on his country and neighbouring Gulf states is limited.
