Invasive spotted lanternfly detected in Windsor, first detection in Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed that the invasive spotted lanternfly has been detected in Windsor.

This marks the first official detection of the bug in Canada.

The Invasive Species Centre describes the spotted lanternfly as a “significant threat” to the grape, wine, horticulture and forestry industries.

Residents are advised to be on the lookout for the fly as early detection is the key to prevent establishment.

If someone believes they have seen the lanternfly or its egg masses, it is advised to take a photo, trap the eggs and report the sighting to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency by phone or online.
