Human remains stolen from Hamilton car found in Oxford County

Hamilton police say a box containing human remains that was stolen in the city’s west end last week has been found in Oxford County.

The box had two sets of lower leg bones, believed to be from the 1800s, that were found at a construction site for a church in North York.

The bones were placed inside a cardboard banker’s box and given to an archaeologist to be transferred to a secured facility. However, the box along with a power tool and cell phone charger were stolen from the trunk of the archaeologist’s personal vehicle sometime between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Police say they were contacted on Thursday by members of the Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police who said the box had been found inside an abandoned vehicle with stolen plates.

Hamilton police say the box appears to be intact and will be reunited with the archaeologist.

Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
