Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak was in Vaughan laying out his “million jobs plan.” Hudak says he can create 200,000 jobs over four years by eliminating restrictions on skilled trades.

“I think 200,000 jobs in the skilled trades, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, it’s going to rebuild our middle class. It’s the backbone of our middle class, and these jobs are always going to be in demand.”

“When I spoke to the folks down at Conestoga, the young men, young women there, a lot of them are looking to go out west instead of here in Ontario. I think that this whole outdated, politically motivated restriction, like, why would you restrict young people from getting good jobs in the trades?”

“Allow each journeyman to mentor and train an apprentice, one each. That will help create 200,000 positions.”

Hudak says he would allow more young people to train as apprentices so they can can get jobs as plumbers, welders and electricians to help address a labour shortage in the skilled trades. Hudak also says if elected he would abolish the College of Trades, calling it a tax grab.
