Hamilton’s Main St. and other roads begin construction
The long process of changing Hamilton’s Main Street from one-way traffic to two is taking another big step starting Monday morning.
Hamilton city councillors voted more than two years ago to convert traffic flow along the busy thoroughfare, as a way to reduce speed and increase pedestrian and driver safety.
Lane closures begin Monday on a stretch of Main St. East between Emerald Street and Erie Avenue.
Several other lanes along Main Street will be closed or restricted over the next few days.

The two-way traffic project is expected to be finished in late 2027 or early 2028.
These traffic construction projects follow after extensive roadwork began on York Blvd. and Cannon St. East in July, with Locke Street closing down last week.

Main St. East from Emerald to Erie Avenue will see temporary lane closures until Wednesday.
Fifty Road between 198 Fifty road and Cokers Lane/Concession Road will be have a lanes temporarily closed daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., finishing construction after Friday.
Cannon St. East between Province Street North and Park Row North will have a lane closed on Monday for a water service upgrade but is scheduled to resolve by around 3 p.m.
Upper James Street between McElroy Road and Richwill Road will have Sewer Lateral Repairs closing one lane for Monday, but is also planned to re-open after around 3 p.m.
Upper Ottawa Street on the LINC overpass will close a lane daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for minor structure work, finishing construction after Friday.
Additional road work will take place on Main Street overnight Monday, from 7 p.m. to the next morning at 7 a.m., closing multiple lanes from Walnut St. South to Ferguson Ave. South, and at Main St. East at Wentworth St. South.
