Hamilton Public Library’s Central Branch could temporarily close as officials deal with growing safety concerns.
At Wednesday night’s library board meeting, members discussed a rise in drug use and behavioural incidents inside the downtown location.
Chief Librarian Paul Takala says drugs are being openly distributed in the building, with overdoses and security responses increasing significantly in the last few months.
Library officials say the situation has overwhelmed staff, forcing repeated washroom closures and even a Sunday shutdown due to safety risks.
Takala says a temporary closure is being considered while renovations and new safety measures are put in place to protect staff and families.
Hamilton city councillors are set to hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss the library’s budget and next steps.
