Hamilton’s Claremont Access expected to reopen by end of October

The City of Hamilton says that all lanes of the Claremont Access are expected to reopen by the end of the month.
The downbound lanes of the popular mountain access have been closed since March to address erosion and concerns about the stability of the slope.
On March 14, the city began exploring short-term approaches that would allow for the reopening of the access, which includes relieving pressure by removing some steel walls before working on removing larger walls.
However, city staff said a short-term fix to the problem was not feasible and planned for work towards a permanent solution to begin in May.

All lanes were originally expected to reopen sometime in August or September.
Jackie Kennedy, director of engineering services for the City of Hamilton, says that repairs have been going well and are on track to be open before November.
Kennedy says the city will be taking drone video of the access once the work is complete and then again on an annual basis to compare footage and assess if additional repairs are needed.
The director says that the city is additionally trying to determine a long-term solution for the escarpment.
