Hamilton’s 2023 budget supports $285.7M in infrastructure projects

Hamilton’s city council approved its new tax supported budget, setting $286.7 million towards infrastructure projects in 2023.
In a media release on Wednesday, the city finalized the capital budget, which represents an increase to the 2023 tax levy of $9.3 million.
In order to fund the projects, the average Hamilton household will have to pay $41 more in city taxes this year.
The money will go towards purchasing 36 new city buses, redeveloping the West Harbour Waterfront and funding an electric vehicle strategy.

The city says the tax supported capital budget will also help address inflation and supply chain impacts on current city infrastructure projects.
Additionally, it will support strategic investments in the city’s 10-year plan for affordable housing, poverty reduction and a climate action plan.
A total of 55 per cent of the property tax collected goes towards municipal services.
The 45 per cent that’s left goes to boards and agencies, and provincially funded programs such as Public Health Services, paramedics, long-term care, housing, Ontario Works and children’s services.
