Hamilton announced that youth between the ages of 13 and 19 can ride for half price on Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) this summer as part of the city’s ridership recovery strategy.

The city made the announcement Tuesday, saying the 50 per cent discount will automatically apply beginning June 1, to single rides and monthly passes when using a PRESTO card set for a youth concession. School or government-issued ID will be required.

“This is a great opportunity for youth who are working a summer job, taking summer school, or getting back out into the city for summer events and activities,” said Director of Transit, Hamilton Street Railway, Maureen Cosyn Heath in a statement. “By making transit more affordable, we’re encouraging more young people to use transit and building the ridership of tomorrow.”

Previously announced fare promotions include free rides for children ages 6-12 using PRESTO until April 30, 2023, and an enhanced loyalty program that helps customers earn free fare after eight trips.

“I’m excited that the City of Hamilton is able to cut fares in half for youth aged 13 to 19 this summer,” said Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger, in a statement. “With soaring gas prices, transit is an affordable option that connects youth to employment and academic opportunities and enables greater connections with their communities, family and social networks while keeping more money in their pockets.”

The summer youth fare promotion is part of HSR’s ridership recovery strategy that was approved by Council last October.
