(Updated)    A Hamilton woman and her pet chihuahua who were hit by a car 3 months ago were reunited. The 63 year old woman couldn’t afford to pay the dog’s vet bill and thought she’d never see her best friend again but the community opened their wallets to pay for the vet costs and today the pair reunited.

It wasn’t as Diane Cowling had hoped, 1 year old susie was extremely nervous about the reunion. It was small steps to get familiar again with a woman who cherishes her.

“I’ve had her since she was 3 weeks old and I bottle fed her and this is my baby.”

An illfated walk on June 11th tore Susie from Diane’s arms. A Burlington woman in her car hit the pair as they crossed the road.

“I remember hitting the windshield, I remember waking up like this blood on my mouth, head and fingers.”

Diane suffered broken ribs, a broken wrist and a concussion. Susie’s leg was broken. The vet bill was $2500. Diane couldn’t afford to pay for it and thought susie was lost to her forever. Until, friends and the community started donating money to pay for Susies operations.

“For Hamilton to support me and Susie and all the prayers and everything it’s just unbelievable, Hamilton is a great city and I thank them. It’s amazing.”

Diane moved to a new apartment on West Avenue South a month ago because she says it was too traumatic for her to live so close to where her and Susie had been hit by a car.

“I think that with Diane knowing that she’d be reunited with Susie it helped her progress in her healing.” said Deanna Maerz from Animal Angel Rescue Foundation.

Sandra and Brian Troop fostered Susie.

“It’s even better now that they are reunited. As a pet lover it’s a great thing But yes we will miss her”

As Diane and Susie continue to heal, a Burlington woman is facing charges of careless driving for texting while driving.
