Let the selfies begin!

The new HAMILTON sign outside City Hall will be officially unveiled at a ceremony Friday night.

“This is going to be selfie central, I’m pretty sure,” said Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“I hope people take lots of pictures and spread it around the world.”

The sign is 20-metres long, with each letter standing at just over 2-metres tall and will be lit at night.

Its $300,000 price tag was covered by private donations with the city responsible for maintenance costs.

According to Mayor Eisenberger, they’ll spend $1.50 a day to power the LED lights.

Hamilton’s own Max Kerman of The Arkells says he is excited for the sign but wishes there had been more collaboration with people in the arts community.

“I think anything that makes Hamiltonians proud of being from Hamilton and kind of celebrates the city is usually a good thing,” he said from Bristol, UK where the band is performing.

“I’m excited for it but I’d also say it’s good to have a real collaborative effort whenever we do anything in the city.”

A lighting ceremony is happening Friday in the forecourt of city hall between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
