A common frustration for drivers this time of year is attempting to avoid the many potholes that are plaguing the streets of Hamilton.

So far this year, crews have repaired 27,000 potholes and expect to repair a total of 70,000 to 90,000 more by the end of the year.

A spokesperson for the City of Hamilton, Peter Sniuolis, says road crews are repairing damaged roads in several priority areas.

Sniuolis says potholes usually form during the freeze-thaw cycle.

“When water does get in the pavement, it expands,” he said. “Once it thaws, it leaves a void, material enters, and through that cyclical failure of traffic driving over it, you get that pothole forming.”

The spokesperson adds that crews are also taking a proactive approach, and are patrolling the busier roads to track and fix potholes.

To report a pothole, contact the city’s customer service centre at 905 546-2489.

Residents are asked to provide the location and an approximate size of the pothole.
