Hamilton police warning community about new bank card scam

Hamilton police are warning the community about a new bank card scam that’s targeting seniors.

Police say the fraudsters contact victims by phone using a number that looks like it belongs to a legitimate bank.

The scammer then tries to convince the target that there has been irregular activity in their bank accounts, and that their bank cards have been compromised.

This is meant to trick the victim into providing personal information, such as their home address, password and PIN numbers.

The fraudster then says a courier is on the way to pick up the compromised bank cards.

Once the cards are collected, the scammer uses the information provided over the phone to withdraw money or purchase electronics.

Police would like to remind the community that a bank will never send a courier to collect bank cards.

Anyone who receives a call like this is encouraged to hang up, contact their bank directly and report the incident.
