Hamilton police are advising residents to take precautions when buying and selling items online after a recent robbery in the city.

On March 22 at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers were called to a home in east Hamilton for a reported robbery.

Investigators say a husband and wife arrange to sell an iPhone through Facebook Marketplace, agreeing to meet the buyer at their home.

The buyer arrived with two additional individuals. The couple reported that the group appeared uneasy.

During the interaction, one individual inspected the phone before the group fled the area on foot with the iPhone.

The husband pursued them – but the chase ended when he was sprayed with bear spray.

Detectives say this marks the 14th marketplace-related robbery in Hamilton this year. According to authorities, iPhones are the most targeted item.

When buying and selling items through online marketplaces, officers are urging residents to do the following:

  • Meet in a public place: Choose well-lit, busy locations. Hamilton Police Station 30 (400 Rymal Rd. East) offers a designated “Buy and Sell Zone” for safe transactions.
  • Check profiles carefully: Be cautious of newly created accounts with little or no history, personal details, or transaction reviews.
  • Bring someone with you: Attend meetups with a friend or inform someone of your meeting location and expected time.
  • Use secure payment methods: Whenever possible, use electronic money transfers. Police have also seen incidents involving counterfeit cash.
  • Trust your instincts: If something feels unsafe or suspicious, leave the situation immediately. There will always be other opportunities to buy or sell.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact police.
