The future of Hamilton’s police chief is being considered today, as the police service board looks at whether it will renew the contract of Glenn De Caire.

The board has until the end of this year to decide if it wants to renew De Caire’s term for three more years. His current term is done at the end of 2016.

De Caire has been Hamilton’s police chief for the past six years, after serving 29 years with Toronto Police. The crime rate in Hamilton is down more than 29 per cent since 2009, representing a national trend.

However, in a recent survey by the Hamilton Police Association, 72 per cent of officers said they do not want the chief’s contract extended. Many of the officers told the survey they are working in a culture of fear.

Other items on the agenda today include presentations on youth crime, officers wearing body cameras, how to deal with people in crisis, and new vehicle purchases.

Kate Carnegie is at this afternoon’s meeting and will have the latest tonight on the Evening News at 6.
