The City of Hamilton is advising residents that water levels in Lake Ontario are currently elevated and they are currently monitoring the level closely.

Residents, specifically of the Beach Boulevard neighbourhood, are advised to take precautions to protect their homes in case of a flood.

The city has granted unique permission to the Beach Boulevard neighbourhood to direct water to the roadway if needed.

Other residents are asked to direct flood waters to lawns or gardens to prevent unnecessary runoff on roads.

The city has provided several tips for residents to protect their homes and neighbourhoods:

  • Move basement furniture, electronics and valuables to other levels of your home
  • Temporarily seal basement floor drains
  • Check and ensure sump pumps are functioning normally
  • Don’t attempt to turn off your power if water is present, call your electricity provider instead
  • Only flush the three Ps – pee, poo and toilet paper
  • Ensure downspouts are directed to lawns or gardens instead of the sewer system
  • Direct water from sump pumps to a lawn, garden or roadway instead of a drain or sink to prevent a sewer backup

If flooding is experienced, the city advises:

  • Contact your insurance provider or broker immediately
  • Take pictures of all affected areas and damaged belongings
  • Do not enter a property if it is unsafe of if electrical hazards are present
  • Contact the City of Hamilton at 905-645-2489 to report a sewer-related flood
