Hamilton condo residents without heat for days amid extreme cold temperatures

It’s been four days since some residents in a downtown Hamilton condo have had any heat. The problem began after a weekend power outage knocked their heat pumps out of commission. Now, with the coldest temperatures the region has seen all year, residents want to know why the issue still hasn’t been fixed.

The residents in question live at 212 King William Street, a newer building serviced by a company known as Enercare. Residents say that despite promises made in the wake of the power outage, Enercare has still not fully restored the heat—forcing some residents to turn to space heaters to stay warm.

On Saturday, an early-morning blackout temporarily cut power to some residents in downtown Hamilton. Four days later, while electricity has been restored, some units are still without heat, including the apartment of Gibbons. Today, her apartment thermometer read 60 degrees Fahrenheit, or 15 degrees Celsius. Gibbons says a technician was scheduled to arrive between 8 a.m. and noon today, but never showed up.

The building had previously sent a letter to residents reminding them that the heat pump is their responsibility and that they must contact Enercare directly. The company says the heat pump issues are related to the power outage, adding that “many of the heat pump boards need to be manually and individually reset or replaced to restore proper operation,” but did not provide a timeline for when full service would be restored.
