After nearly 100 years, the Hamilton Aviary hosted its final open house on Sunday.

The decision to close the current location which has been a sanctuary to the tropical birds since the nineties is due to relocating.

“Our beloved flock will soon be off on new adventures in their carefully selected placements and would love to have their biggest supporters wish them well,” reads a statement from the Hamilton Aviary.

Emily Downs, a board of directors member, says the flock will be left in good hands.

“The birds will be placed between volunteer homes, Toronto Zoo, and Bird Kingdom,” said Downs.

Once the birds have been placed, the not-for-profit will focus on educational programs and workshops, while raising money for a new sanctuary.

Hamilton City Council voted last year to close down the current site because of costly and much-needed repairs.
