Halton Region Public Health has announced another confirmed case of measles in the region.

Residents may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus if they were in OakGate Medical at 3075 Hospital Gate in Oakville on June 12 between 2:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Public Health advises to monitor for symptoms of the virus for 21 days after a potential exposure.

Symptoms of measles include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • Sleepiness
  • Irritability
  • Small, white spots on the inside of the mouth (Koplik Spots)
  • A red blotchy rash that first starts on the face and spreads down the body, arms, and legs (this rash can last four to seven days)

“Measles is a serious disease that can be prevented with a safe and effective vaccine. I encourage everyone to ensure their immunizations, including for measles, are up to date, particularly children who may have missed their routine shots during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Dr. Deepika Lobo, the Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region.

If you believe that you have measles, Halton Region Public Health says to call the office of the medical centre you are going to visit prior to visiting so it can prevent further exposures.

The last confirmed case of measles in the Halton area was in Oakville, and was announced on May 1. This exposure occurred on April 26 and 27.
