Halton police are investigating after a smash-and-grab robbery at Michael Hill Jewellers in Mapleview Shopping Centre.

Officers say at around 3 p.m. Sunday, four people entered the store and used hammers to break open display cases and take the jewelry inside.

Authorities describe the four people believed to be responsible as males who were all seen wearing dark clothing and face coverings.

The accused were seen leaving the mall in a newer model dark grey Honda Civic that was being driven by a fifth person, according to police.

Initial reports from witnesses claimed to have heard gunshots, investigators say they have determined this to be the sound of the hammers colliding with the display cases.

Detectives have not found any evidence that firearms were seen or used by the individuals responsible. They also say there have been no reports of injuries to staff or customers.

Police have not yet determined the quantity or dollar amount that was stolen from the store. The investigation is ongoing.
