St. Catharines’ Pen Centre evacuated after suspected gas leak

The St. Catharines fire department has evacuated the Pen Centre after a gas odor was detected near Zehrs in the mall.

Fire Chief Dave Upper says they responded to the call just after 9 a.m. Monday morning and they evacuated the building as a precaution.

The chief says that the source of the smell was a leaking gas meter outside the building between Zehrs and the movie theatre.

He says the gas company is now at the scene and they will allow customers and staff to enter the building once the ventilation is complete.

The fire chief could not confirm if the leak was weather related.

This is a developing news story. More to come.
