A man has shot a Canadian woman dead and injured 13 others, including an additional Canadian tourist, before killing himself Monday at Teotihuacan pyramids near Mexico City.

Authorities say seven of the people injured were wounded by gunshots, while it has not been made clear how the others were hurt. Reports indicate that several people fell when the shooting started, resulting in injuries. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for medical care.

The Security Cabinet of Mexico has listed Canadian 29-year-old Delicia Li de Yong as one of the 13 taken to hospital. There has been no update on their condition.

The gunman was standing on top of one of the historic pyramids when he opened fire on the UNESCO World Heritage Site crowded with tourists.

Mexico’s security cabinet says a firearm, bladed weapon and live cartridges were secured at the scene.

In a social media post, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said an investigation would be launched into the shooting and that she was communicating with the Canadian Embassy.

The identity of the deceased Canadian woman has not been confirmed by officials.

The Teotihuacan pyramids are a popular tourist and archaeological site outside of Mexico City.
