Shipping traffic on the Welland Canal has been suspended indefinitely, while environmental crews work to contain a fuel spill.
About 150 litres of fuel spilled into the canal while a Canada Steamship Lines vessel was refueling. It happened near wharf two in St Catharines about one this morning.
The Coast Guard is surveying the containment efforts from the air. The canal’s been shut down since 1:30 this morning.
There were six ships backed up in the lake as of mid-afternoon.
