Friday marks the four-year anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting.

A series of commemorations will take place to remember the six men who were killed when a gunman stormed the Islamic cultural centre and opened fire. Five other people were hurt.

Virtual events organized by the mosque and affiliated groups will begin shortly before 11 a.m. with a reading from the Qur’an, which will be streamed on platforms such as Facebook and Zoom.

On Thursday, the federal government announced that it plans to make Jan. 29 the “National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.”

The shooter, Alexandre Bissonnette, eventually pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder.

He was sentenced originally to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

In November, the time before parole was reduced to 25 years, a move the Quebec government intends to contest at the Supreme Court.
