Doug Ford’s PCs secure third consecutive majority government

Ontarians have cast their ballots, re-electing Doug Ford and his Progressive Conservative Party (PC) as the majority government for a third consecutive term.
The PC party is leading in 80 of 124 ridings in Ontario – more than the 63 needed to secure the majority.
“I will work with anyone, I will work with everyone to get things done,” Ford said in an address to his supporters at his campaign headquarters in Toronto.
“Now as we stare down the threat of Donald Trump’s tariffs, […] I will work with every level of government and every political stripe – because fighting back against Donald Trump, standing up for Canada, it will take a full team Ontario effort, it will take a full team Canada effort.”
Marit Stiles’ New Democratic Party (NDP) will form the Official Opposition, and is leading in 27 ridings.
Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie is projected to lose in her own riding of Mississauga East-Cooksville.
However, the Ontario Liberal Party is expected to regain official party status after falling short by just four seats in the 2022 election.
Mike Schreiner’s Green Party of Ontario is leading in two ridings.
“I want to congratulate Mr. Ford,” Schreiner said in a statement.
“Greens will do our job to hold your government accountable. Now is not the time to agonize, but to organize.”

Although Ontarians were not scheduled to pick a new provincial government until June 2026, Ford called a snap election in order to secure a strong mandate ahead of the looming threat of Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Other party leaders, however, have accused Ford of calling the early election for his own benefit, noting the PCs already held a majority and would have received support for stimulus measures.
This was the first winter election in Ontario since 1981. Party leaders campaigned across the province for only 28 days.
Ford’s campaign largely centered around building more housing, strengthening Ontario’s economy and fighting off the threat of U.S. tariffs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a statement congratulating Ford on winning another term, saying “we must work together to defend Canadian interests, protect workers and businesses, and grow our economy.”
“This includes making progress on the top-of-mind priorities of Ontarians and all Canadians – creating good-paying jobs, building more homes, and investing in health care and affordable child care.”
