The one week countdown to the first day of school has begun and the back to school jitters are common. It’s very normal for both kids and parents to be a little nervous about the first day back but with a bit of preparation, you’ll be all smiles when the bell rings.

Jenny Athanasiou-Malisa is the mental health lead for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, she says many kids worry about the unknowns of a new school year. “Wondering about who their teachers are going to be, are their friends going to be in their class. Maybe they’re starting a new school, maybe they’ve come from a different country.”

Helping with tangible back-to-school preparations like shopping for supplies, or planning what to pack for lunch can turn nerves into excitement. It’s also a good idea to practise your route, especially if your child is new to a school.

If kids express concern about fitting in or making new friends, remind them of past successes and above all, make sure your own nerves don’t rub off on them. Use the next week to adjust sleep schedules, pack bags, and soak up the last few days of summer sun and your family’s first day of school will be smooth sailing.
