Fireworks are back in the City of Hamilton for Victoria Day this May long weekend.

The Dundas Driving Park will be booming with the show in the sky, along with plenty of other activities.

The park is expected to be packed for the fireworks show, which starts at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

There’s also going to be live music, food trucks and more, but this isn’t the only event going on in our area this long weekend.

As boats go in the water at Bayfront Park, and people take their dogs out for a walk, the long weekend is in the air.

That fun can also be had in your own backyard with some fireworks.

Victoria Day is one of two holidays where residents are legally allowed to set off their own backyard fireworks in Hamilton between dusk and 11 p.m.

One fireworks shop says it has gotten busier as weekend approaches.

“Definitely compared to yesterday and Wednesday, because we started on Wednesday, it has definitely been more busy today for sure,” said Tomi Odesilo, who manages a store selling fireworks. “Right now we actually got some stuff restocked, so this would be a perfect time, you know, it’s a Friday night, right before it gets hectic on Saturday and Sunday.”

Meanwhile, some weekend-long events have already gotten started like Poutine Feast at Gage Park, a festival focused on the iconic Canadian food.

“You’re talking about Canada’s national dish — everybody likes poutine — the community always comes out in great support here in Hamilton and we’re happy to come out every year,” said Dave Conway, the VP of marketing at Poutine Feast Ontario. “It’s a real community thing and really a Canadian pride thing to celebrate our traditional poutine dish.”

There’s nothing like getting in touch with your Canadian roots, although beef brisket isn’t exactly traditional, but if that is what you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it over in Binbrook this weekend.

Summer Ribfests are also kicking off at the Binbrook fairgrounds, with live music, vendors and plenty of BBQ ribs.

As for what’s open and closed this weekend, all Hamilton administrative offices will be closed on Monday.

Most grocery chains will be closed on Victoria Day. while independent stores may choose to stay open following legislation change that allows them to.

Select LCBO and beer stores are open Monday and GO Transit will be operating on a Saturday schedule, while HSR buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Victoria Day.

No matter what you’re getting up to, for many, it’s a much needed time to unwind.

The fireworks show at Dundas Driving Park is expected to be very busy, which means the surrounding streets will have lots of people walking around.

Residents in the area are reminded to drive safely and to be careful.
