Many are mourning and angry following the shocking, fatal collision on Upper Centennial Parkway on Friday that killed two people in one vehicle.
Hamilton police continue to investigate the crash, while others demand action regarding safety along the Stoney Creek artery.
A half dozen flower bouquets placed against a cross with the name “Joey” on it rests at the scene of the horrific crash.
“I’ve been here for over 10 years and I’ve seen several accidents, but this one is the most horrific that I’ve seen,” said nearby resident Kathy Marof.
Residents who live in the area of Highgate Drive near the intersection of the major Stoney Creek artery are saddened as well as angry by the long history of collisions close to home.
Hamilton police said the two people killed came from the same vehicle. It was around 6:30 in the evening when officers responded to the scene. And investigators determined that two vehicles collided and one went up in flames.
They added that the two other people from the other vehicle survived and went to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
CHCH News reached out to police Sunday asking for more details, including what led up to the collision and if speed was a factor. They’ve yet to respond prior to publication of this story.
“My hearts and prayers go out to the families of the victims. It really was a horrific collision that words can’t even adequately describe,” said Brad Clark, Ward 9 City Councillor.
Clark believes road safety around Upper Centennial Parkway should be an immediate priority — and that traffic lights, as well as a consistent speed limit, must be a consideration.
“Just after Mud Street it turns to 60 – and we’re seeing these collisions. So the traffic department needs to look at the ways to make the road safer,” said Clark.
Clark says he will speak with the city’s traffic division and Hamilton police about a safety plan, and intends to draft a motion on it. He says he aims to present it at an upcoming committee meeting.
