Halton Region has issued a cold warning while Environment Canada has placed Hamilton and surrounding areas under a yellow warning for extreme cold.

Environment Canada said bitterly cold conditions are expected late tonight into Tuesday morning.

Wind chill values of -25 C to -30 C are expected with brisk winds gusting up to 50 km/h.

The weather agency said extreme cold risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Meanwhile, Halton Region issued the warning Monday because temperatures are expected to fall below –15 C without wind-chill and weather conditions are severe enough to warrant alerting the community to the risks involved with prolonged exposure.

Cold-related symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.

Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.

The cold warning will remain in effect until the low temperature for the day is projected to be above –15 C.
