‘Explosive device’ brought to Brantford fire station

A Brantford fire station was evacuated on Monday after a resident brought what was thought to be a live motar into the building.

The resident found the device while cleaning out a deceased relative’s property and brought it to the fire station around 10 a.m.

“As a safety precaution, the Brantford Fire Department and Brantford Police Service briefly evacuated the Fire Hall, until it was determined that the mortar was an antique training round,” said Brantford police in a news release.

Everyone was allowed back inside around 3 p.m.

Brantford Police Service is reminding residents to contact police as soon as a suspected military ordinance is found. “Explosives, weapons, firearms, and ammunition should never be transported to a Police station or Fire Hall but rather investigated on site where found,” said police.
