Norfolk County OPP say to expect an increased police presence on local beaches on the first Friday of June, a day that many students are calling ‘Beach Day’.

Police say that the unofficial tradition is not endorsed by schools or law enforcement.

On ‘Beach Day’ students often leave school — sometimes without parental consent — to get together along the lakeshores of Long Point, Turkey Point and Port Dover and surrounding areas.

The OPP encourage all students who plan to take part to “make responsible decisions and make safety a top priority.”

“We recognize that many students look forward to spending time with friends as the school year begins to wind down. Our message is simple: make responsible choices, look out for one another, and avoid behaviours that could put your safety or future at risk. One poor decision can have lasting consequences,” says Constable Andrew Gamble, Community Engagement Officer, Norfolk County OPP.

Officers will look our for behaviours that put people at risk, including: underage drinking, impaired driving and boating, trespassing, property damage, disorderly conduct and any other unlawful or unsafe activity.

Police say that violations under the Highway Traffic, Liquor Licence and Control, Cannabis Control, Trespass to Property, and Criminal Code and the Canada Shipping acts will be strictly enforced during this period.
