Comic-Con 2015

With both Marvel and Sony taking a pass on this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it gave Warner Bros. a chance to roll out the carpet on its upcoming DC universe of films, and they made the most of their opportunity. Debuting new footage from next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, which has been shooting in Toronto since April, Warner turned heads and likely converted some naysayers that didn’t think the studio could rival Marvel’s cinematic universe.

But superheroes weren’t the only thing being showcased by Warner Bros. The studio showed off a lengthy new trailer for Guy Ritchie’s upcoming The Man From U.N.C.L.E. film starring their Supes (Henry Cavill), Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander.

While they kept their upcoming Marvel films under wraps, Disney still showed up with a nice behind the scenes look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The marketing for Episode VII has been on point, pulling at fans’ heart strings with nostalgia while teasing just enough of the new stuff to keep everyone on the edge of their seat. They’re also very up front with their use of practical effects – maybe a bit of a dig at George Lucas and his CGI heavy prequel trilogy?

Last but not least, a short militaristic teaser premiered during the panel for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss seems to be coming to terms with her role in the rebellion set up in Mockingjay – Part 1, decked out in fire-red armour.

With the amount of comic book, sci-fi, and fantasy franchises coming out with films in the next few years, Comic-Con will become a battleground of sorts for the studios wanting to promote their properties. Don’t be surprised if we see more exclusive reveals scheduled outside of conventions in the future, a strategy Disney has been embracing with their Marvel event last October and their Star Wars Celebration this past April.
