Haldimand Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady was the only Independent candidate to win a seat in the provincial election in June. CHCH News spoke exclusively to Brady today about life at Queen’s Park as an Independent.
Brady is a long-term conservative but she was elected to the legislature in June as an independent.
Brady’s journey to Queen’s Park began when the Progressive Conservative party appointed Caledonia Mayor Ken Hewitt to run in Haldimand Norfolk instead of holding a nomination meeting.
Brady says she refused to accept the decision, ran as an Independent, and won.
“I knew that I could do it because the people of Haldimand Norfolk, I was certain were going to back me. They believe in democracy. They believe in local decision making,” Brady said.
As the only Independent MPP with no party affiliation, she sits alone in the legislature right behind Green party leader Mike Schreiner.
Brady says her status as an Independent gives her important freedom to work without the constraints of a political party telling her what to do.
Brady also says just about everybody in the legislature has gone out of their way to welcome her except Premier Doug Ford.
“The premier has not acknowledged me, he has not spoken to me, but that’s fine. The rest of his caucus has been very kind,” Brady said.
