Charge laid in death of Thorold baby

A 37-year old man has been charged with manslaughter after the death of his grandson in Thorold.

Brian Matthews was arrested today. The charge is related to a 911 call from a home on Thorold Townline Road on July 25th.

Police responded to a report of a 13-month-old child in medical distress.

Kody Smart was taken to hospital in St. Catharines before being transferred to McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, where he died the next day.

Family and Children’s Services placed Kody in his grandfather’s care, even though Matthews had been previously convicted of child abuse.
