Careless smoking is being blamed for a fire at a senior’s high rise complex in Hamilton.

A woman in a 14th floor apartment on Strathcona Avenue North was taken to hospital and treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Fire crews say she tried to put the fire out herself around 11:30 last night.

Other tenants on the 14th floor were evacuated but returned to their apartments after smoke was cleared from the building. The fire damage was confined to the one unit and is estimated at $8,000.
