3 young Niagara men on a training flight in the U.S. are dead after the plane they were flying crashed in Pennsylvania Sunday night. The small aircraft was flying to Niagara District Airport from Richmond, Virginia when it fell off the radar. 18-year-old Corey Mijac, 19-year-old Ben Jeffries and 25-year-old Rifat Tawfig were on board the ill-fated flight.
The Piper P-A 28 aircraft lost contact with air control near Potter county Pennsylvania around 7 p-m. The plane had just left Richmond International airport in Virginia after refueling. Tawfig was an instructor at the St. Catharines flying club and had over 400 hours of flight experience.
The club says there was some rain in the forecast, but nothing that would have damaged the plane. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the National Transportation safety board.
